Raising Donations: Here's How to Do It Right!

Challenge

5 Obstacles in Fundraising

The more donations you raise, the better. But the challenges you’ll face along the way are no small matter. Many organizations face obstacles that make fundraising significantly more difficult. We want to give you a comprehensive overview of these challenges:

  • Limited budgets , which make it difficult to plan and carry out fundraising activities.

  • High technical complexity in managing donor data and communication strategies.

  • Low response rates in donor communications when they are not personalized.

  • Difficulties in actively and continuously engaging new donors .

  • Lack of knowledge about optimizing donation amounts and their impact on cash flow.

The good news is that there are ways to overcome these hurdles and increase your donation revenue. Start by actively engaging your supporters and communicating effectively.

Solution

The Five Most Important Factors for Increasing Donations

To generate more donations over the long term, you should use five key strategies.

Engage new donors immediately after their first donation—with personalized, automated communication. Maintain contact with existing supporters through regular, personalized project updates.

Deliberately include higher donation amounts as options on the donation form, as these have been shown to lead to larger donations—tools like “Dynamic Donations” can help with this. Identify potential major donors based on their past donations and interests, and reach out to them specifically.

Finally, you should rely on direct debits and recurring payments: They offer planning certainty and increase donor loyalty. Through segmentation and automation, you can also initiate targeted changes in this area.

Implementation

Generate More Donations in 5 Steps

1. Actively engage new donors

If you want to raise more donations, it’s important not to wait weeks before reaching out to new donors again. It’s better to involve them in your communications right away. Send them a welcome message. Thank them for their donation and then consistently provide them with tailored content. Make sure your communication is personalized. In other words, don’t send first-time donors mailings that are primarily aimed at long-time donors. With marketing automation, new donors automatically receive tailored content.

2. Nurture Your Donors

Let your supporters share in the successes and milestones of your projects. Send them regular updates and let them know how much more is needed to reach the next milestone. Ideally, this should also be personalized and automated.

3. List higher donation amounts on the donation form

Offer your donors a preselected range of donation amounts. Experience shows that supporters tend to donate more as the amounts you specify increase. Instead of 10, 25, and 65 euros, give them the option to donate 80, 100, and 120 euros. As a fourth option, donors can enter a custom amount. This amount will also be higher when the preset amounts are set high. Determining donation amounts is a complex topic, and organizations should not underestimate its potential. Our solution is called Dynamic Donations! You can read more about this below.

4. Generate Large Donations

Analyze your database for donors who have already donated four-digit amounts. Reach out to them directly. When soliciting donations, you can refer to specific projects. To find out which topics are of interest, take a look at past donations, provided they are project-specific. If no project-specific donations have been made yet, you can use engagement tracking to find out which content has sparked the most interest so far. Engagement tracking lets you see exactly how long donors spend engaging with content and which pieces generated enough interest to be forwarded or shared.

5. Rely on direct debits and recurring payments

Regular, recurring donations allow you to plan your budget more effectively. Many donors also find it easier to give several small amounts than to spend a large sum all at once. Be smart and take advantage of your supporters’ convenience: A bank transfer requires the donor to take action. Canceling a standing order or direct debit authorization for a donation to you also requires them to take action. Use your database to segment the contacts who do not yet pay via direct debit or standing order but who donate regularly. If your marketing automation system is integrated with your CRM, you can contact these donors automatically to offer them the option to switch their payment method. How does that work? These steps are crucial for raising more donations and building a committed community of supporters.
